Amsterdam, Netherlands – Rijksmuseum National Gallery

The famous Rijksmuseum has a unique collection of Dutch art of the 15th to the 19th Century. It is the largest museum in the Netherlands and has about 7 million articles. Part of the museum is currently under construction.

The main collection and national pride, is the work of the 17th Century Dutch masters of the Golden Age. Rembrandt is impressive, the painting The Night Watch drama – one of the most important and most famous of his paintings – portraits of a militia based in Amsterdam in 1642 and is one of the jewels of the time. His painting The Jewish Bride and works painted by the students are also represented. Several paintings by Johannes Vermeer, known for his love of detail and the representation of space and light, are represented, including The Milkmaid and The Love Letter. Haarlem artist Frans Hals, known for his vibrant portraits and Jan Steen with his humorous depictions of everyday life, also prominent.
